Shetland - missing elevation data

by AndyAmphlett » Tue Mar 26, 2019 9:47 am

Tom,

checking monad elevation data in Shetland using this query - https://database.bsbi.org/search.php#re ... a0df3b9b37 - only returns valuies for 147 monads. But there are 2253 monads in Shetland. Is the elevation dataset the DDb uses missing a lot of Shetland coverage?

I'll check, I think it's quite possible that some coverage is missing. I might still be using the SRTM data, which had the British Isles very close to the Northern limit of the survey: https://www2.jpl.nasa.gov/srtm/coverage.html

There is elevation data available from OS which I may be able to use instead now.

Tom,

Yes, Shetland is mostly missed by the SRMT dataset. The OS dataset 'OS Terrain 50' covers the whole of GB (but not Isle of Man) at 50m precision. The original SRMT dataset was at 90m precision , but I see they have now released it at 30m precision. The options with higher precision would increase elevation accuracy in areas with marked topography.
