Hi Tom,

Dactylorhiza fuchsii var. alpina has two entries in the DDb taxon dictionary:

1). Dactylorhiza fuchsii var. alpina (Landwehr) R.M.Bateman & Denholm (published in Watsonia 17:341 (1989)). The DDb lists this var as synonymous with, or is subsumed within, Dactylorhiza fuchsii.

2). Dactylorhiza fuchsii subsp. hebridensis var. alpina (Landwehr) R.M. Bateman & Denholm.

See - https://database.bsbi.org/search.php#re ... e0953a305d.

Puzzled, I checked with Richard Bateman who replied saying "Our whole point in resurrecting and recognising var. alpina was to emphasise that it is NOT to be mistaken for hebridensis! So I've no idea where the idea originated that alpina belonged within hebridensis."

So it looks like Dactylorhiza fuchsii var. alpina should be reinstated as a distinct taxon available in the DDb. It is included in Sell & Murrell Vol. 5.

Thanks,

Andy.
