"Secret" records

by jdsh » Mon Aug 13, 2018 3:36 pm

Am I right in thinking that in order to put in a reduced visibility record I first need to put it in with all the details visible from the new record page, then edit the record from the search page to change the visibilty? As far as I can see there isn't an option to do this directly on the new record page. This is straightforward to do, but potentially has the risk that the record might be spotted before the visibility is obscured. This is a very rare requirement for me, but I've had a specific request for an unusual orchid record. I can't see any way to do it directly in MapMate.

Hi Jon,

As far as I know there's no way to obscure details in MapMate. You can mark a record as 'archived' which will prevent in sync'ing but then it also would not reach the DDb, so that is not a good solution.

I agree with you that it would be useful to be able to mark a record as sensitive at the point-of-entry in the DDb, rather than having to do so via the search form. This is does leave a brief time-window when details might leak, but I think that risk is probably more theoretical than of practical concern.

Several taxa including several orchids (see list, below) are automatically blurred for 'non-privileged' users. For these taxa, site names and notes are obscured and grid-references are blurred to 10km resolution.

Thanks Tom. In that case I can put it into MapMate as it is one of the species on the list.
